Exercising is important for elderly people

We all know that regular exercising is important. It is even more important for elderly people. It has the same, positive, effect on life expectancy as the quit smoking. According to an analysis of 5.700 elderly people in Norway, those who exercise 3 hours a week, live 5 years longer than people who don’t exercise. After the analysis, the authors are trying to encourage people to exercise. The study was conducted by the Oslo University Hospital. They determined that both, light and vigorous exercises have the same, positive, effect. In the UK, doctors suggest that people over 65s should have 150 minutes of exercising per week.

The study also found that people between 68 and 77 years of age, who exercised less than an hour a week (light exercises) didn’t get that positive effect. On the other side, those people who exercised 6 times, 30 minutes each week, had 40% less chance to die during this study, which lasted 11 years. Also, the study found that people who are 73 years old (average) could live 5 years longer if they exercise regularly. Now, many public health strategies (in elderly men) include efforts that should make more people reduce or give up smoking and exercise often.

According to the British Heart Foundation, the percentage of adults that do not exercise is: Germany (26%), Croatia (34%), UK (44%), France (46%), Poland (55%) and Portugal (69%). Netherland has much better numbers (14%). A recent study found that more elderly people in the UK do not exercise than in the rest of Europe. Doctors are suggesting that every elderly person should exercise.
